Senators Fields and Exum, co-prime sponsors, presented House Bill 23-1145, concerning juveniles ordered by a court to be detained in an adult facility while awaiting trial.   The bill sponsors explained that the bill changes petition timeframes for juveniles being held in an adult jail to align with federal law and caps the amount of time a juvenile can be held in an adult jail to 180 days.

Program Manager - Office of Adult and Juvenile Justice Assistance Kelly Abbott, representing Colorado Department of Public Safety, testified in support of the bill.  She discussed that the bill ensures time frames are aligned with federal law for juveniles in adult jails.
